Qualcomm Snapdragon 660

Specifications, benchmarks and impressions of the Qualcomm processor for devices of the average price category, released to replace the Snapdragon 653.

With the release of the Snapdragon 820 processor , Qualcomm switched to the 14nm process, starting its distribution in early 2016. The same technological process became available for mid-segment chips in the Snapdragon 625 , which appeared to replace Snapdragon 617 . Technological process of 14 nm FinFET allows to increase energy efficiency. The Snapdragon 625 consumes 35% less energy than the Snapdragon 617 on the 28 nm process.

As a result, Snapdragon 625 turned out to be extremely popular, working in smartphones from Xiaomi Redmi 4 Note for $ 150 to the BlackBerry KEYone for $ 500. In the second half of 2017, Qualcomm introduced two updates to the Snapdragon 600 line as a Snapdragon 630 and 660 model.

Snapdragon 630 is a successor to Snapdragon 625, with 30% faster cores, support for Bluetooth 5 communication standard, faster LTE modem, USB 3.1 protocol in USB-C interface, image processor and Quick Charge 4.0 recharging standard.

Snapdragon 660 is an even more interesting product, which replaced Snapdragon 653. It is designed to bring the performance of the flagship level in the mid-range devices and received a number of updates.

The processor has two Kryo processing cores, for the first time in this price segment, the new Adreno 512 graphics processor, Snapdragon X12 LTE modem with incoming connections up to 600 Mbps and aggregation of three frequency bands, Wi-Fi a / c with 2 × 2 MU- MIMO, Spectra 160 image processor, Bluetooth 5, Quick Charge 4.0 and USB 3.1. We are talking about improving performance by 20% compared with Snapdragon 653 thanks to the new Kryo 260 cores and increasing the performance of the graphics processor by 30%.

Snapdragon 660 Specifications

  • Central processor: 4 Kryo 260 2.2 GHz cores, 4 Kryo 260 1.8 GHz cores
  • Graphics processor: Adreno 512,850 MHz
  • Memory: 2-channel LPDDR4, frequency 1866 MHz, bandwidth MHz, Gb / s
  • LTE: Snapdragon X12 LTE modem category 12, incoming speed up to 600 Mbps, outgoing speed up to 150 Mbps, aggregation of frequencies 3 × 20, 256-QAM
  • Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi a / c, bandwidth up to 867 Mbps, 2 × 2 MU-MIMO
  • Image processor: 14-bit Spectra 160, single camera with a resolution of 24 megapixels, double up to 16 megapixels, zero shutter lag, hybrid autofocus, optical zoom
  • Bluetooth: version 5.0
  • Fast recharging: Quick Charge 4.0
  • Technological process: 14 nm LPP

There is no information on which ARM cores the Kryo 260 is based on, but most likely Qualcomm used its own design, as happened with the Kryo 280 in Snapdragon 835 . The cores are divided into two clusters for maximum performance and energy efficiency. In the first case, the clock frequency reaches 2.2 GHz, in the second 1.8 GHz.

Of particular interest is the Spectra 160, allowing you to create great cameras. Supports hybrid autofocus, dual rear cameras with a resolution of 16 megapixel each sensor, dual photodiode autofocus, smooth optical zoom and electronic video stabilization.

The Oppo R11 smartphone is the first on the Snapdragon 660 processor and allows you to compare the results with models on the Snapdragon 652, 835 and others.

These data show growth in productivity to a level close to last year’s flagships. Also noticeable is the significant increase in battery life compared to smartphones on the Snapdragon 650, 652 and 653.

The main problem at the time of the appearance of Snapdragon 660 was the shortage of processors. Smartphone Oppo R11 was sold only in Asia, the company had no plans to bring it to other regions. In the last quarter of the year, which has already begun, new smartphones should appear on this chip. One of them is Moto X4 .

When the shortage problem is resolved, the processor can be extremely popular with manufacturers. The speed of the CPU is close to the flagship Snapdragon 835 and is easily ahead of low-end models.
