Oneplus 5 Review

The best and most controversial smartphone of this Chinese manufacturer. Since the company does not issue other models, all bets are placed on it. Was this approach justified?

You are reading a translation of the review from the portal PhoneArena.com , the original material was published on June 27, 2017.

The new device OnePlus 5 is an evolution of the successful formula: here is added a double camera with portrait mode and the fastest processor at the moment. It became the next smartphone of the Chinese manufacturer, which just 3 years ago made its way onto the market and turned into one of the most recognizable brands among the flagship manufacturers. This happened thanks to the word of mouth and a large group of loyal fans, as well as through the production of devices of the upper price category at a reduced price.

OnePlus 5 compared to previous models has become more expensive, got the look in the style of iPhone 7 Plus and a similar dual camera at the back. This is the best smartphone company and the most controversial of all. This manufacturer does not release other devices, so the bet is placed exclusively on it. Let's see how the expectations of the manufacturer and consumers were met.

Contents of delivery

  • Smartphone OnePlus 5;
  • Charger 5 V, 4 A;
  • USB-C cable> USB-A;
  • User's manual;
  • SIM extraction tool.

The photos show that if onePlus 5 and iPhone 7 Plus are put down next to each other, the difference is difficult to notice. It is difficult to deny that the Chinese company borrowed the appearance of the Apple smartphone, but when you take the smartphone in your hand, the similarity becomes not so noticeable. The curved back surface, the lines along the edges and some other details make the smartphone an independent unit.

Interesting fact: OnePlus is owned by the Chinese company BBK Electronics, which also owns the brands Vivo and Oppo . OnePlus 5 can be called a combination of the flagship smartphones of these two companies, Vivo X9 and Oppo R9s. The vivo X9 looks almost indistinguishable from the OnePlus 5, and the Oppo R9s uses almost the same dual camera and fast recharging.

The OnePlus 5 has a 5.5-inch screen with a 16: 9 aspect ratio. For this ratio, the smartphone turned out to be quite narrow, which allows you to comfortably hold it in your hand. Of course, he is far from the convenience of an even narrower Galaxy S8. The back surface is curved and at the edges of the smartphone becomes thinner, which improves its ergonomics. On the other hand, the case is slippery, the device tries to slip out of the pocket. For this reason, it is advisable to use a case.

In front of the device there is a physical button Home, which has grown compared to previous models OnePlus. It is habitually located fingerprint scanner . This is one of the fastest scanners, it works almost instantly.

The developers did some little things right: the side buttons are metallic, they click and click easily, with a pleasant stroke. On the left there is a three-position button for working with a sound with a relief surface, so it is easy to find it with your finger without looking. USB-C connector is located in the center below, but it is limited by the speeds of the USB 2.0 protocol, there is also a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Two important features are missing: no protection against water and wireless recharging. The head of the company claims that protection from water makes smartphones thicker and heavier, not seeing a great need in it. Buyers on this issue may have different opinions.

The OnePlus 5 has a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. The lack of resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels means that the screen is not as clear as on Google Pixel XL or HTC U11 smartphones. Despite this, in reality, the difference is almost imperceptible. For almost any use of this resolution is more than enough.

The colors are set to juicy by default, everything looks vivid and very contrasting, while there is a bluish tint.

In the settings there are two color modes Pro. In the first, you can switch to the sRGB color range, which most cameras use today and most content is optimized for it. The colors look less saturated than the default. The main problem is the greenish shades of white, so this option can not be recommended unconditionally. Another option is the DCI-P3 color range. This is a new standard for smartphones that also supports the iPhone 7. The colors here are more saturated than in sRGB, but there is a greenish tint here too. For this reason, the review left the default color mode, which, although not the most accurate, but the most pleasant.

As for brightness, it is not outstanding here. This can be a problem when working outdoors, especially on sunny summer days. Maximum brightness is only 435 nits.

The screen is protected with Gorilla Glass 5, so it is more durable compared to previous models.

Interface and functionality

The device uses the OxygenOS shell over Android. Its key feature is the speed of work and the absence of unnecessary pre-installed applications. This interface has useful customization options. At the core lies Android 7.1.1, the most current version at the moment. This manufacturer is not the best history of updates Android, but the company promised to fix last year with the release of OnePlus 3. As long as she keeps her word and regularly releases updates for key system problems.

The latest version of OxygenOS has quite a bit of innovation. One of them is a gesture up to open a list of applications, like on Pixel smartphones. There is a new reading mode, which makes the screen gray and sharpens, which should reduce eye strain when reading. Of course, real e-books are far from here.

There was a "Do not disturb" mode in games, so that accidentally pressing a button would not prevent playing. There is a new safe folder for personal files, the ability to create advanced screenshots and automatic activation of night mode.

The rest of the interface remains the same. You can set up quick access to certain actions by double-clicking or long-pressing the Home, Back and Recent Applications buttons , for this you need to open the Settings > Buttons section. For example, you can set a smartphone lock by long pressing the home screen. You can swap the Back and Recent Apps buttons. You can activate the on-screen navigation buttons.

A dark interface mode is available, available in Settings > Customization . The background and the list of applications become dark, which reduces eye strain in the dark and saves battery power.

There are disadvantages. The smartphone works extremely fast, but it does not feel smooth. I would like to see more elegant interface transitions.

There is a problem with the Facebook application. Scrolling news feed was slow and jerking. There are problems with the images. When you try to rotate the smartphone horizontally, the images in Facebook do not rotate after the screen and you have to increase them to full size. I want to believe that developers will fix problems in such a demanded application.

Processor, Performance and Memory

At $ 500, the OnePlus 5 is the most expensive device from this manufacturer. On the other hand, it is the cheapest smartphone on the Snapdragon 835 processor . This is the fastest modern mobile processor on advanced technology 10 nm, which means reduced power consumption.

Also uses the latest type of permanent memory UFS 2.1, which is faster than version 2.0 and far exceeds MMC memory. Applications will load and install faster than before.

The smartphone has a microSD slot, the minimum value of the built-in flash memory is 64 GB. A model with a memory capacity of 128 GB is slightly more expensive; it also increases the amount of RAM to 8 GB from 6 GB in the base model. This will give the opportunity to simultaneously open many games, applications and tabs in the browser. There are no previous problems with OnePlus memory management.

Internet and communication

The default browser is Google Chrome, which offers speed, synchronization between different devices and usability. On OnePlus 5, it loads web pages extremely quickly.

The device supports 34 frequencies, which allows you to work in 4G LTE networks around the world. There is also a dual-channel Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 with support for aptX and aptX HD and NFC .

The main camera in OnePlus 5 can be called good, but not great. It quickly starts and focuses, but the detail of the photos is lower compared to the OnePlus 3T. The new portrait mode is a plus, the lack of video stabilization when shooting 4K minus.

The smartphone has a dual rear camera, like the iPhone 7 Plus. There is a main wide-angle camera and auxiliary telephoto, which are used to artificially blur the background and take pictures in the style of digital SLR cameras.

It seems that it uses the same system as the Oppo R9s smartphone. The main module has changed since the OnePlus 3T, instead of the Sony IMX298 sensor, the IMX398 and f / 1.7 lenses are used. Both sensors have a resolution of 16 megapixels, the pixel size is 1.12 microns. The fastest autofocus technology Dual Pixel is supported.

The second module received f / 2.6 lenses and a resolution of 20 megapixels. The term "telephoto" here is deceptive. The main camera has a focal length of 24 mm, the second one has only 36 mm, although it should be at least twice as large.

How is the 2x zoom achieved? Switching to the second camera gives 1.5x, so digital zoom is also used. Portrait mode with a blurred background works differently. By default, a 1.5x zoom is applied here, when there is enough light, both cameras are used, but when it is dark, only the main one is used. After that, using the processing program creates a blur effect. As in the iPhone 7 Plus, an ambient light sensor is used to analyze the light level and only when there is enough of it, the second camera is activated. If the light is low, only the main camera and digital zoom are used.

As for the camera app, it is clean and fast. You can start it by double pressing the power button.

Gesture left and right switches between photo, video and portrait mode, to change the exposure, you need to click on the object and hold up or down. In the pop-up menu, you can see a list of photographing modes, there is a photo shoot, video, portrait mode, Pro, Time Lapse, slow-motion and panorama. For selfie, there is a decoration mode that is turned off by default, you can turn it on and adjust the effect strength.

Image quality

Photos from these cameras can not be called outstanding. They are not bad, but do not reach the best. Compared to the OnePlus 3T, you can find five key differences in photography: softer focus, more digital noise, higher contrast, brightness, and a yellowish tint.

The increased brightness and contrast make the photos on the OnePlus 5 more expressive and cheerful compared to the OnePlus 3T. However, it is worth looking closer, there are big problems with image quality. On closer inspection, photographs are vague and inconspicuous. This is a big step backward even in comparison with the OnePlus 3T, especially noticeable in macro and close-up shots. The photos have a lot of digital noise even on a bright sunny day.

What has become better is speed: the dual focusing system works extremely fast. In low light, a wide aperture of f / 1.7 helps to gather more light and improves image quality. This also contributes to a strong dual LED flash, although it gives a cool greenish tint that spoils the color rendition in the photos.

As for the front camera, it is satisfactory. Detailing here is at a very good level, sharpness and dynamics, too.

Portrait mode, double zoom

The second camera has a focal length of 36 mm. It needs a lot of light for its work, so often the device uses only the main wide-angle rear camera for portrait photography and even for 2x zoom. When the second camera comes into play, it provides increased frequency and resolution, which brings a noticeable improvement in quality.

There is a separate button for 2x zoom. It produces flat images with minimal distortion, even if the quality is not the highest.

It is also interesting to check the portrait mode: can it compare with the analog from iPhone 7 Plus? The answer to this question depends on the circumstances; sometimes the quality of photos is lower, sometimes higher. The iPhone often takes depressingly dark images that are close to worthless, while the OnePlus 5 manages to produce much more pleasant photos. The iPhone is better at the edges of the picture, where the artifacts of artificial blur are most noticeable, but OnePlus is not far behind. Both devices in this regard are not ideal.

Video quality

OnePlus 5 can shoot 4K video, which looks detailed and clear, but it does not have stabilization. There is not only optical stabilization, but also normal digital. As a result, the slightest vibrations of the hands lead to shaking on the screen. This noticeably harms the attractiveness of 4K video on this smartphone, so it is recommended to use 1080p resolution, where there is normal stabilization.

Autofocus Dual Pixel perfectly manifests itself in the video. He is able to catch and capture an object instantly, with the result that sharpness is always at the highest level.

Sound quality

On the smartphone there is a single speaker at the bottom, very loud. Perhaps this is the loudest speaker among all smartphones. You can compete with friends who are louder, it is impossible to lose.

Naturally, this does not mean that the sound quality is high. As with most smartphones, it lacks depth, but no one expects this from mobile devices.

There is a headphone jack, there is also support for the new Bluetooth 5.0 standard with aptX and aptX HD, which improves the sound quality when using wireless headphones.

Call quality

There was no problem with the quality of telephone communication. The audibility at both ends of the telephone line is normal, the sound is loud and clear enough, the voice can be easily recognized. The microphone also copes with its work, so your interlocutors will not have problems.

Autonomous work

OnePlus 5 received a non-removable battery with a capacity of 3300 mAh, which is 100 mAh less compared to OnePlus 3T. A more energy efficient Snapdragon 835 processor and not the highest resolution of the screen help it to work a full day. Up to two days of operation, the device does not reach. Since this is almost a flagship smartphone, the battery life can be called very good. In real life, with the screen on, it works 4-5 hours.

In the tests, the device was ahead of most of the flagships and turned out to be equal to the iPhone 7 Plus. The result was 9 hours and 18 minutes, better than previous devices OnePlus.

There is a standard for fast recharging Dash Charge. This is a proprietary technology OnePlus, thanks to which the charging takes less than 1 hour and 40 minutes. The advantage of this technology is to maintain a high recharge rate, even when you work with a smartphone. For half an hour, you can charge your smartphone for a whole day, more than 50%. For the work of the standard, you need to use the charger and the USB-C cable supplied, third-party accessories will not work.

Oneplus 5 is a very good smartphone at a very good price. However, he is a victim of high expectations. Its merits are not enough to fully comply with the flagship apparat. There is no impressive design of the Galaxy S8, the smoothness of the iPhone or Pixel.

The two main advantages are price and performance, as well as a fast and accurate fingerprint scanner. The interface offers customization where it is needed. The battery life is high, fast recharging is impressive, as on past OnePlus devices.

Dual camera does not meet expectations and it can not be called excellent. Using a smartphone reveals some unexpected problems, such as problems with a Facebook application with numerous bugs. The case of the smartphone is rather slippery, so it is better to buy a case.

OnePlus 5 does not feel as evolutionary as last year. This is the fruit of gradual development, but if you need a solid and fast machine at an affordable price, it is difficult to find a competitor for this model.
