Fast charging technology: what is it?

Recently, smartphones have increasingly begun to receive support for one technology or another of fast charging. But this fact does not please some buyers, but only scares. They believe that fast charging speeds up the process of battery failure. Today we will try to find out if this is so.

For quite a long time, mobile phones did not need accelerated charging. Why, if the device was connected to the charger only once every three to four days? But with the advent of smartphones, everything has changed. These devices have increased power consumption. As a result, we have become accustomed to the fact that in most cases they need to be charged every night. But what if you forgot to connect the gadget to the charger in the evening, and in the morning you need to go to work? It is in such situations that fast charging saves. While you are brushing your teeth, making the bed and going to work, the battery will charge by 50% or even stronger. Let's talk about this technology a little more.

Traditional recharge

Any battery works on the principle of the electromechanical process. It runs in both directions - the battery can take energy, accumulating it, or give it away. For many years, engineers have tried various chemical current sources. Previously, nickel and lead were used , but now all batteries for mobile phones are based on lithium . They can be lithium-ion or lithium-polymer - it does not matter at all, as the fast charge technology works with both types of batteries. The main advantage of lithium is that it has no “memory effect”. As a result, you can not wait for the moment when your smartphone is completely discharged. And it is not necessary to charge it up to 100%. If not for this fact, fast charging would be useless. As for the disadvantages of lithium batteries, they consist in the gradual loss of capacity and fire hazard.

In modern smartphones put the battery capacity from 2000 to 7000 mAh. Rated battery voltage is most often equal to 3.5-3.7 V. With its full charge level, the voltage can be increased to 4.2 V, which allows to increase the performance of the processor and some other components. As for the charging of the battery itself, it used to be very simple - the current came with a strictly defined power up to the moment when the charge level reached about 90%. Then the power was gradually reduced, so as not to "recharge" the battery, it was done by a special controller. And so on until a 100% charge is reached. As a result, the recharging time was 2-2.5 hours, depending on the battery capacity.

How does fast charge work?

The first to try to change something was Qualcomm . In 2012, she introduced the first version of the Quick Charge technology. As planned by the manufacturer of mobile chipsets, in the first stage, the charger should deliver the current of the maximum possible power. And when the battery controller realized that the charge level had reached a certain level - the power went down.

What is the function of fast charging is different from the usual? Let's look at this with an example. Take the most common phone charger (pictured above). On its case we will see the inscription: “Output 5V / 1A”. This means that as much as possible the device outputs a current with a voltage of 5 volts and a force of 1 ampere. The output power of such a charge is approximately 5 watts. Technology Quick Charge 1.0 has changed a little. The smartphones supporting it have learned to accept electricity with a current of 2 A. All other parameters of the charger remained the same. With the same battery capacity, full charge is 30% faster.

Much more interesting was the second version of technology from Qualcomm. It consists in an even closer interaction between the battery controller and the charger. From now on, the current could already reach 3 A. Also now the voltage changed during the charging process - at first it is 12 V, then decreases to 9 V, and at the end drops to the standard 5 V. Compared with the use of a traditional charger, the process was accelerated by 60 %! The disadvantage of this technology is the high cost of the charger, because it incorporates a special chip. However, most consumers do not care, because most often the charger is bundled with a smartphone, and the need to buy a new one occurs very rarely.

In September 2016, Qualcomm introduced the Quick Charge 3.0 technology. Its battery chargers and battery controllers are even smarter. Now the optimal voltage is selected individually for a specific device and battery charge level. Voltage now varies from 3.6 to 20 V. The step change is only 200 mV. As a result, the third version of the technology turned out to be 38% more efficient than the second. Support for Quick Charge received Snapdragon 430 , 617, 618, 620 and 820 processors.

Versatility

Not all smartphones are endowed with a Qualcomm processor. Fortunately, there are other fast-charging technologies on different Android devices. Almost all of them work on the principles described above. In this case, the phone can be connected to a high-performance charger from another manufacturer - nothing will happen to it. In some cases, its power controller will allow you to charge your smartphone at an accelerated pace. In other cases, the charging will go in the traditional mode - with a current of 1 or 2 A. In any case, the charger will not damage the device.

However, it is better to still use the charge that came in the kit. There have been cases in the world when a battery flashed for some reason. This contributed to the Chinese charger and poor-quality USB-cable.

Separately, it should be noted products under the brand OPPO . She uses a unique technology VOOC Flash Charging . Batteries in the endowed smartphones have eight contacts. Electricity enters the battery with a current of 4.5 A and a voltage of 5 V. The battery consists of several cells and the current is evenly distributed between them. As a result, recharging occurs very quickly. Also, the manufacturer claims that its technology is more careful with the battery, without reducing its service life.

Is quick charging harmful to the phone?

Most of all, some people are frightened by the fact that fast charging of a smartphone is carried out with the help of amplified current. It seems to them that the battery does not tolerate such a relationship. Allegedly, just a year later it will have to change. And indeed, the first technology of fast charging had an unpleasant feature. The working capacity of the battery quickly declined, if the smartphone is used too actively, charging it once or even twice a day. However, since 2012, much water has flowed under the bridge, now everything has changed.

Modern technologies allow the power controller to receive electricity in such a volume that is required by the battery in a specific second. Current strength and voltage never exceed threshold values. All this is confirmed by numerous experiments from independent experts. They showed that the capacity of the battery falls at the same pace as when using a conventional charger. Therefore, you can not be afraid to use fast charging - it will only make your life easier.

How to disable fast charging?

If you are still afraid of fast charging, then your further actions depend on how fresh your smartphone is. The fact is that on modern devices, support for this technology is implemented at the controller and firmware level. Disable fast charging in such gadgets is most often impossible. The only way out is to purchase another charger that does not support fast charging technology.

Well, on smartphones 2012-2014, you can still disable this feature. This is done in the " Settings ", in the " Battery " section. On Samsung devices, you may need to visit the pre-installed Smart Manager application.

Fast Charging AC Adapters for Samsung and Apple

The South Korean company Samsung equips many of their smartphones with support for proprietary fast-charging technology. The corresponding adapter is supplied with the device. However, some users lose this small accessory, while others require additional “charging”, for example, for use at work. In short, it would be surprising if the South Korean giant did not sell power adapters separately.

In the Russian stores, products with Samsung fast charging support cost from 1,200 to 1,500 rubles - this is quite an adequate price. Adapters are supplied with or without cable. It also differs in how the connector is equipped with a wire - for quite some time there are options with USB Type-C , since the flagships have just such a socket. The largest number of produced "charge" is painted white. But if you try, then on sale you can find a black version, which occurs much less frequently.

With the iPhone, everything is much more complicated. Apple has provided iPhone 8 , iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X support for fast charging. However, a specialized mobile charger that can transmit large amounts of energy was not released. In this regard, in the box with a smartphone you can find the simplest adapter with a current of 1 A. What to do? Only one way out: go to the store for the network adapter Apple, originally intended to connect to the "MacBook."
Any of the three above-mentioned iPhones supports 29 W, 61 W and 87 W power adapters. The higher this parameter, the faster the charge will be carried out. The problem is that powerful network adapters are too large - you can’t put this accessory in your pocket. Again, they were designed for use in conjunction with a laptop, so reducing the size of the big meaning was not. Another important disadvantage of these adapters is the price. For the version with a power of 61 W will have to pay about 5500 rubles! However, "apple" products are always expensive. But in this case it is already the greed of the manufacturer. Yes, and how can you ask such money for a thing that is trivially inconvenient to use?

Fast charging network adapters on AliExpress

The most famous Chinese online store offers many accessories for smartphones. Including in its open spaces you can find power adapters with support for fast charging. For example, network charging Fonken, which has miniature dimensions, is delivered directly from a warehouse in Russia. The device is primarily intended for smartphones and tablets that support technology Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. The cost of the accessory is about 500 rubles. Not bad, especially considering that it comes with a meter-long USB cable with high-quality braid.

Buy Fonken Charger

All the same fast charging technology is supported by the Tiegem adapter. This device is estimated at 800 rubles, but it is much more versatile. The fact is that up to two gadgets can be connected to this charge - this is the number of USB ports built in here. The current is 2.4 A, and the power - 30 watts. Such a charger is ideal for Huawei , LG and other large companies.

Buy Tiegem Power Adapter

Of course, this is not a complete list of power adapters sold by AliExpress . Here you can find accessories of various shapes and colors. There are even solutions that have five connectors! Also, for some time now, the Chinese online store allows you to buy original products from the same Samsung - South Korean adapters are now also in the range of AliExpress.

    • What is a tick? As far as I know, on the new Samsung even there is no such item in the menu - it is impossible to disable fast charging. And now, if anything, “Fast Charging” is not being written on the lock screen. At least on some firmware. In my Galaxy A5 2016 in the first half of the year was not written. And after the update in early summer, this inscription appeared again.

      • Fast charging disappeared on the lock screen, but with it the charging process itself takes 3–5 hours to charge. This is terrible compared to fast charging.

          • It is possible that something happened to the charger itself. Either with the power controller in the smartphone, but this is less believed. I can't even suggest anything more.
