18: 9 screen aspect ratio - a new trend?

More and more smartphones are getting an 18: 9 aspect ratio display. Is this a new standard or a temporary phenomenon?

For a long time, touchscreen smartphones were very similar to each other. This was explained by the same aspect ratio. It seemed to the creators that 16: 9 was the perfect choice. And this is at a time when manufacturers of LCD displays do not have any restrictions. For example, modern monitors can boast not only an aspect ratio of 5: 4 or 16: 9 - among the options offered to customers there are 18: 9 , 21: 9 and even 32: 9 ! Why not try to give the screen with an increased aspect ratio and a smartphone? No sooner said than done!

New Display Benefits

It was life itself that made smartphone manufacturers experiment. The Android operating system has long ago learned to display two active applications on the screen at once. And on the standard screen, they do not have enough space - many interface elements are lost. It would be possible to increase the diagonal of the display. But this is the road to nowhere, as the size of the device grows with it. After overcoming the 6-inch mark, the smartphone becomes inconvenient for everyday use. That is why the engineers decided to increase the height of the screen, leaving the width the same (or even reducing it). At the same time, attempts are being made to reduce the side frames in order to achieve even greater compactness. So the phones with an aspect ratio of 18: 9 began to appear.

On the display with a new aspect ratio, it is much more convenient to work with a couple of applications. And this despite the fact that on some smartphones the screen area has even decreased. For example, let's find out what area the LCD panels of three popular devices have:

  • 6P: 90,7 см 2 ; Nexus 6P: 90.7 cm 2 ;
  • U Ultra: 90,2 см 2 ; HTC U Ultra: 90.2 cm 2 ;
  • G6: 86,5 см 2 . LG G6: 86.5 cm 2 .

Of these three devices, only the LG product received a 16: 9 aspect ratio screen. Engineers could not get rid of the side frames, so they had to slightly reduce the diagonal of the display, and after that the area. Otherwise, the device would be too large - it would be impossible to control the functionality of the operating system with one hand.

A smartphone with an aspect ratio of 18: 9 has one more advantage. Such a device stands out from the competition, it becomes more unique. At least for now. In the future, everyone will switch to this aspect ratio, after which people will again talk about the fact that smartphones have become the same.

Bulk transition

It seems that people like the new screen size. After the LG G6, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 + were born. Interestingly, their display has an aspect ratio of 18.5: 9. That is, he is already. Need I say how popular these flagships have become? Not surprisingly, the South Koreans later introduced the Galaxy Note 8, which also received an LCD panel with a new aspect ratio. And that was just the beginning!

By the end of 2017, manufacturers of budget smartphones pulled themselves up. For example, the narrow screen is able to boast frameless DOOGEE Mix 2. But Xiaomi Mi Mix turned out to be a little wider - its screen has an aspect ratio of 17: 9. In fact, only 120 pixels were added to the height of this display. Some manufacturers have tried to copy the design of the South Korean flagship - for example, Bluboo S8 is made in a recognizable style. That's just the resolution of the screen installed here is only 1440 × 720 pixels, and the bends of the sides are missing here. The Homtom S8 turned out to be a similar smartphone - the difference between this model is only in the iridescent back panel.

Difficulties in production

Do not think that tomorrow all new smartphones will switch to a new aspect ratio. The fact is, when creating such devices there are several difficulties:

  • Each screen should be sharpened for a specific device, especially if it will have a frameless design. That is, it is impossible to produce many displays at once and sell them to different manufacturers.
  • On the front panel there is no room for a fingerprint sensor , and its location on the back cover does not seem convenient to everyone.
  • If you try to achieve a frameless design, then there are difficulties with the placement of the front camera.

However, all these problems are gradually being solved. Contributes to this and the development of technological progress. Therefore, someday, a display with an aspect ratio of 18: 9 will have absolutely all smartphones, with the exception of the cheapest.

Summarizing

Like it or not, phones with an aspect ratio of 18: 9 and 18.5: 9 are very convenient. We recommend that you hold such a device in your hands. It is possible that in the future you will want to use only a smartphone with this aspect ratio.

Perhaps you already twisted a similar device in your hands? Or are you already using it with might and main? Write your opinion in the comments.

  • Sony is already stamping 21/9, soon it will be 32/9, then 60/9 and smarts will turn into “sausages” thin and long, ugly devices. With the same diagonal, 16/9 has a larger screen area, against 18/9, what is the benefit then of lengthening one side and reducing the other?
