The best portable monitors

If you want to increase productivity when working with a computer, the ideal scenario is to connect two or more screens to a PC or laptop. But what if you are on a business trip? The solution is a portable monitor.

Using multiple monitors, you can open a spreadsheet on one screen, edit a document on another and chat with colleagues on Skype or Slack on the third. But what if you later find yourself in a hotel room with only one laptop, and just can't remember how to work with one display? To alleviate these problems, we will list the best portable monitors that you can buy right now for work, games and general use.

Before we get started, we need to understand the difference between USB-C and USB-A connections in terms of video output. Your PC's USB-C port can support DisplayPort, which is an alternative to HDMI. However, this is not a guarantee, as manufacturers may limit the USB-C connection to power, data transfer, or a combination thereof. Before buying a portable USB-C-based monitor, you should check your PC specifications.

If your USB-C port supports DisplayPort, you can simply connect the portable monitor to a PC without installing additional software. This does not apply to USB-A connections, as they do not support video output. To connect the display via USB-A, you will need the DisplayLink drivers installed on your PC. Moreover, if the USB-C port supports data but not DisplayPort, you still need DisplayLink drivers.

You can download the latest drivers here:

Many of the portable monitors listed below use a USB-A or USB-C connection. You will also find standard DisplayPort and HDMI connections on multiple devices along with Micro and Mini. You will even come across models that require a separate power supply, while others consume power directly from a PC.

TN and IPS

One screen in our list has a matrix of type TN, while all others have IPS . Short for Twisted Nematic, TN Technology is the oldest of the two, serving as the first type of LCD panel to replace CRT monitors. Advantages - short response time, high brightness level and ultra-high refresh rate, which makes TN panels ideal for games. However, they do not provide wide viewing angles and do not support more color tones.

IPS, short for In-Plane Switching, is the successor to TN technology. IPS panels are ideal for creating and accurate color reproduction of content thanks to the support of more than 16 million colors and wide viewing angles. Refresh rates and response times have improved over the years, but gamers might be better off using TN displays if color depth is not prioritized.
