The Russian manufacturer BQ regularly makes attempts to conquer the middle price segment of the mobile market. And you can’t call them unsuccessful, since the Space X and Aurora models that came out earlier received a lot of positive feedback, including from our site. The company has clearly become crowded in the budget segment, and the advent of the innovative BQ-6015L Universe is another confirmation of this.
At the time of publication of the review, the Universe smartphone costs only 12,990 rubles, although it certainly would not have been lost among devices with a price of 20 thousand or more. We will tell you why this gadget is worthy of attention.

Packaging and design
The flagship status of the Universe smartphone is already indicated by the fact that it is sold in a square box atypical for BQ, monotonously red. The name of the model is written on the side with embossed raspberry-colored letters. It looks intriguing - I just want to quickly remove the film and see what's inside.
We see that the smartphone lies in the tray, and just to the left of it is a box in which the complete accessories are the power supply and MicroUSB cable. Mandatory "literature" - a warranty card, instructions, a coupon with a promotional code for branded accessories - is located under the tray with the phone. Among the papers you can find a needle, which is necessary to remove the tray under the SIM.
To say that Universe is attractive is to say nothing. It is dazzling - and literally, since the case has a mirror-like 3D coating and sparkles without exaggeration. Yes, the back surface does not seem as impressive with the fingerprints that remain on it after some time of use. You will have to periodically wipe the case with a silk cloth - but it's worth it!
In front, the device also looks extremely curious - due to the U-shaped display, which envelops the eye of the front camera. About the same "little thing" can be observed on the iPhone X. To speak of plagiarism, of course, in this case is not necessary - rather, about a new trend.
With the exception of the selfie camera, which flaunts in front exactly in the center, the rest of the elements are typically located. Mechanical keys - power on and volume control - are located on the right. The Power button is embossed. Above is a standard headphone jack. Bottom mesh to hide the speaker and microphone, as well as a MicroUSB connector for recharging. On the left side, the SIM tray is “hidden” - alas, combined.
The design of the device can be described as premium and original. You may not be impressed by the appearance of the BQ Universe, if your “former” iPhone X and the top models of Samsung and HTC are among them. However, in its price segment, the novelty from BQ in terms of design surpasses, perhaps, any competitor.
BQ Universe is sold in 2 colors: blue gray and gold.
While manufacturers abandon screens with a 16: 9 aspect ratio one after another in favor of the new 18: 9 standard, BQ is “one step ahead”: the Universe display aspect ratio is 19: 9. In fairness, we note that the Russian manufacturer is not an innovator, since earlier smartphones with such screens have already released Leagoo , Huawei , Blackview . Nevertheless, to introduce such an exotic solution into the flagship model, one needs a remarkable courage.
The screen resolution is as unusual as its format - 1528 × 720. You may think that it is small for 6 inches - we admit, we also thought so when we looked at the dry numbers of characteristics. In fact, there can be no talk of any pixels - the screen is very bright, with wide viewing angles, made using the technology “without air gap” (OGS). Recognizes up to 5 simultaneous touches.
What you definitely don’t have to think about is the safety of the display. Not only that, the screen is covered with heavy-duty glass of Gorilla Glass 3 generations - it also has additional protection in the form of a factory film.
Performance and memory
Smartphones of the budget and middle price segments, as a rule, work on MediaTek chipsets - all the more unusual to see Qualcomm's processor on the device from BQ. Yes, Snapdragon 435 is not the ultimate dream, but even this “pebble” will be faster than MTK products previously used by the manufacturer.
Universe is the second BQ smartphone with the 435th processor after Space X. At the same time, in the AnTuTu benchmark, the 6015L model proved to be better - it scored almost 60 thousand “parrots”.
This is a good result for the model of the mid-price segment, and by the standards of BQ it is generally outstanding. There is only one smartphone in the catalog of the company that “flies” faster - Aurora.
We tested the gadget in games - the latest Asphalt 9: Legends, Tekken, and Subway Surfers. There were absolutely no problems with the primitive “Surfers”, but in the “heavy” Asphalt 9 and Tekken microlags were clearly visible. It was possible to solve the problem by reducing the characteristics of the graphics.
The RAM of the device is 3 GB. This is more than enough for the simultaneous operation of several applications and quick switching between them. If you open several tabs in the browser, this also will not confuse the device. 32 GB of user memory is enough for someone who prefers to use a smartphone for business purposes. If you are a movie fan or a gamer, we advise you to purchase a flash drive with the device. In Universe, you can put a MicroUSB card up to 128 GB.
Operating system and software
Here, it would probably be worthwhile to tell first of all about Android 8.0 Oreo and its “chips”, but let us start with a function that really impressed us. This is a face recognition feature (or Face Unlock). Innovative technology on Universe works as perfectly as it should on a mid-range smartphone. For all the time of the tests, she never made a mistake and always accurately determined the face of the "owner" even with a lack of light. Moreover, it does not matter at what angle the face is in relation to the smartphone - the lock is removed so quickly that you do not even have time to enter the first digit of the pin code. Face Unlock works just as well as the vaunted and boasted Face ID .
The security of the personal data of the smartphone user is designed to provide a fingerprint scanner. It also works flawlessly, but you have to use it infrequently. The Face Unlock features hardly need an alternative, so the fingerprint on your smartphone just looks like an unnecessary element.
Universe has an NFC module - the smartphone owner can use Android Pay and pay for purchases in stores in a contactless way. Among the BQ gadgets, there are not many models that can boast such an advantage. Unlike the Contact Budget, which is also suitable for contactless payments, B-KU Universe pays very quickly - within a couple of seconds.
Android 8 shell looks like this:
Smartphones that have better self-cameras than the rear ones have already ceased to be considered something out of the ordinary. Universe is one of such devices. The new product from BQ has a wonderful front camera, the main “feature” of which is not even an impressive resolution (16 megapixels), but aperture f / 2.0. Thanks to aperture, selfies taken with a lack of light turn out to be superbly detailed and clear.
The key advantage of the 13-megapixel main camera is phase focusing, which works much faster than regular contrast focus. The risk of getting a blurry shot from Universe tends to zero - even if the picture was taken in low light conditions.
The main camera is perhaps unremarkable. Errors in the photo can be eliminated using the built-in editor, which is very modest in functionality - only three sliders and a dozen filters. An example of a photo processed in the editor is in the photoset below.
Universe is not positioned as a music phone, therefore, relying on some “special skills” in terms of sound is groundless. There is no problem with the volume of the smartphone, although it is somewhat disappointing that the device lacks a built-in “enhancer” of sound. On 7th generation Android BQ devices, there has always been at least one feature aimed at improving the sound in dynamics - BesLoudness.
Battery life is not a strong point of the BQ Universe, but not a weak one either. The device is equipped with a 3000 mAh battery, which demonstrates average indicators of autonomy:
- A moderate mode of use (2-3 calls of average duration plus surfing the Internet) - about 1 day.
- Hard mode (the user constantly plays, interrupting only to watch the latest series of his favorite TV show) - 5-6 hours.
The smartphone can “stretch” without recharging and longer if the “ Energy Saving Mode ” is activated. However, then background data transfer and geolocation are disabled.
Regarding fast charging, there are two news - good and bad. Let's start with the good: Universe supports it. The bad thing is that the included adapter does not support fast charging. If you want to spend less time recharging the gadget, you have to buy the accessory separately.
If BQ continues to produce the same “space” gadgets in the future, then with a quiet glanders it’s sure to get to the premium segment and gain a foothold in it. More recently, we talked about the many advantages of the Mid-End Space X segment model. The Universe is not a bit inferior to it - and in some ways even surpasses it.
The new product from BQ fascinated us at first sight and for the entire time of the tests never made us doubt that it was worth the money that was being asked for it. The main advantages of Universe are:
- Support for Face Unlock, which works extremely reliably.
- 6-inch display with an aspect ratio of 19: 9, placed in a compact case.
- Front camera with impressive resolution and aperture.
- The presence of an NFC-module for contactless payment.
- Performance processor from Qualcomm.
- Original, “mirror” design.
- Modest price (for the described functionality).
Among the minuses include the combined slot, as well as the fact that the back panel of the gadget is constantly covered with fingerprints. However, these disadvantages are more likely from the section of nit-picking - they should not affect the decision to purchase a device.
Using the BQ Universe, we realized that this is not only beautiful, but also practical and functional gadget. On the official website, the model is called "perfection", and we, avoiding big words, just note: everything that the manufacturer equipped the device really works perfectly. Universe gives the impression of a smartphone, worked out to the smallest and most insignificant details. Holding the device in your hand, you realize what painstaking work the developers did to make it convenient for you now - and you feel something like quiet gratitude for this.
