BQ-5508L Next LTE - the next model of the budget line Next. Already from the name it’s clear how it differs from its “predecessor” - the BQ-5522 Next, released in early 2018, could not boast of 4G support. The “novelty” has other advantages - the camera is better, the operating system is more modern. At the same time, Next LTE costs a little more than the “simple” Next - 5 690 rubles against 4 990 rubles.
It is enough to climb the BQ-5508L on the menu to understand: this smartphone is not like any of the "budgets" of the BQ catalog (of which there are a huge number). Why is the new device so special - you will find out by reading our review.

Packaging and design
The smartphone came to us packed in a dense cardboard box, made in red and white colors. In front there is a note about the important advantage of the device - its screen has an aspect ratio of 18: 9 . At the back is a listing of specifications and a description of the scope of delivery.
In addition to the device itself, the kit includes:
- USB cable
- 5V power supply
- Warranty card and user manual.
- Coupon for buying BQ accessories at a 20% discount.
- The film on the screen - it is, in fact, immediately pasted.
- Battery (on Next LTE it is removable).
The smartphone is available in 4 colors: gray, black, gold, red. We got a gray device. In this embodiment, Next LTE looks stern and stylish. There are even neatly drawn antenna lines at the bottom and top - although the case is made of simple plastic, there’s not a gram of metal here.
Despite the fact that the device is quite thick (9 mm), there is no need to complain about ergonomics. The new product from BQ lies in the hand, if not perfectly, then very close to that. The manufacturer’s decision to place a speaker on the back surface of the gadget is doubtful. This slightly spoils the impression of the design and is simply impractical - after all, the user covers with his hand when he holds the “tube” exactly where the perforation is located.
The mechanical elements are somewhat unusual. The left side and the bottom end are empty, although some button asks for the left finger under the index finger - for example, the Do Not Disturb key, like on the BQ Slim. On the right are the “Power” button and the volume rocker, on the top there are connectors for charging and connecting headphones.
Great news for retrograde: BQ Next LTE will not make the owner suffer with a needle and a tray. Sims are put "the old fashioned way" - under the cover. You can put two SIMs and a flash drive at once - and that's great, since the smartphone has not so much memory.
Briefly about the design of Next LTE: this device does not give out its "extra-budgetary" status, although it looks extremely simple, without claims to originality.
The screen has a fashionable 18: 9 aspect ratio and is covered by 2.5D glass - but this, perhaps, is all of its advantages. The main disadvantages include low resolution (not even HD) and the inability to adjust the image quality on the screen. On other BQ devices, MiraVision software is available, which allows you to configure the picture according to a dozen parameters - for some reason, there is no such program on Next LTE.
You don’t have to complain about the color saturation on the screen, but the brightness is a little lacking. Even if you remove the corresponding slider in the settings to the maximum, the device’s screen turns into a mirror on a sunny day.
The camera on Next LTE performs, rather, a "safety" function - if you need to urgently remove something and there is no more powerful device at hand, the device from BQ will be safe. If you take pictures at standard settings in good light conditions, you get clear photos in which you can distinguish even small details and inscriptions. Here are just that part of the picture where the light source (the sun or a chandelier in the subway) is located, is blurry.
This disadvantage can be eliminated by humbling over the settings. Next LTE has, for example, “ Professional mode ” - the photographer can independently adjust white balance, sharpness, ISO, exposure. In addition, there are modes of " Night Shooting " and " Beautiful Face ."
About the 5-megapixel front camera, you can say about the same as about the rear. Alas, its functionality is poorer - the shooting parameters cannot be pre-adjusted. But the selfie camera is equipped with HDR mode and flash.
Performance and Software
We did not test the gadget on benchmarks and torture it with demanding applications - and so it is clear that there will be no record results, because the device has only 1 GB of RAM and a budget processor, which was released almost a year ago. We tested the performance by performing “light” operations on the smartphone — those with which the “budget” should definitely not have problems. It turned out to be more than convenient to search for information on the Internet, communicate in instant messengers and social networks , and also watch videos on YouTube using Next LTE, but not very much to go on the navigator; still, the cards hang a little.
Most of the 2018 BQ models came out with a bare Android 7.0 OS. However, with regard to Next LTE, the manufacturer made an exception - the device has Android 7.1 with a proprietary shell. Therefore, the smartphone’s interface is a bit unusual - not the same as that of the “predecessor” models.
It is noteworthy that there is no application menu - like on an iPhone. All icons are located on several desktops - along with program icons that are predefined by default. The bad news: there are quite a few such programs. Good: it takes no more than 15 minutes to “clean” a smartphone and get rid of unnecessary software. It’s better not to “delay” the “cleaning” - the device “out of the box” has only 3 free gigabytes of user memory. One film in HD-resolution will occupy this entire volume.
You will have to get used to the “ Control Center ” on Next LTE no less than to the lack of a menu. To call “ Center ” on a new product from BQ, it’s not enough just to swipe from top to bottom - you need to swipe from right to left as well.
By Next LTE there can be no complaints about the sound quality - the sound is very loud and quite clear. If you set the volume to maximum, do not miss a call even in the subway at rush hour. The “ BesLoudness ” program, which can be found on many BQ smartphones, is responsible for enhancing the dynamics.
It turned out that the speaker is located behind, there is no problem. If you cover it with your hand, the sound, of course, will become somewhat muffled, but it will still be perfectly audible.
Next LTE equipped with a small battery capacity of 2500 mAh. The device does not set autonomy records, but it does not discharge on the go. Average indicators:
- Standby time - up to 4 days.
- With moderate use (calls, Internet) - 20-24 hours.
- With active use (watching videos, games) - 3-4 hours.
There is no quick charge function on the smartphone. Just as there is no energy saving mode - which was surprising. The device is able to “save” energy only in standby mode - but not when it is used.
The BQ-5508L Next LTE is a pretty representative of the over-budget segment, one of the most affordable 4G smartphones. It’s wrong to consider this device exclusively as a “substitute” for an expensive Samsung or iPhone . The device is also suitable as the main user-ascetic - those who do not need a powerful filling to run demanding games and cameras, the quality of shooting is close to professional. A person who is looking for a smartphone for calls and fast Internet at an appropriate, modest price should definitely take a closer look at a new product from BQ.
