iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S8 +: Comparative Review

The iPhone 8 Plus and Galaxy S8 + are great smartphones, but they have their own strengths and weaknesses. Let's try to understand what is the difference between these two devices.

There are a lot of manufacturers on the smartphone market, but iPhone devices are the only representative of the Apple iOS platform, and Samsung devices have been the embodiment of the Android system in recent years. For this reason, it seems natural to compare the new iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S8 + models. These are large smartphones that contain the best functional capabilities of two manufacturers.

You are reading a translation of the review from , the original material was published on October 11, 2017.

S8 + has become cheaper since it was released six months ago, but it's too early to call it obsolete. There is no dual camera , as on the iPhone, but otherwise it is not inferior and sometimes even surpasses the competitor. Let's try to understand which of these smartphones is better.

Samsung has taken a big step forward with its beautiful, sleek, futuristic screen and metal body . S8 + is a beautiful smartphone with a frameless screen. Apple lags behind its South Korean competitor. The iPhone has a glass back surface that adds style to it. But the large frames around the screen are the same as they were four years ago.

iPhone is available in three colors that look familiar at first glance, but the shades are different from previous generations. The silver device looks almost white and very clean, the gold got a combination of pink and just gold. Both of these options are great at hiding fingerprints. Gray has a brown tint and is not as deep as last year's black or matte black. S8 + is available in four color options: black, blue, silver and gray. Fingerprints are clearly visible on all.

The glass on these devices cannot be called slippery, but if the smartphones are dropped, it will probably break, so it is recommended to purchase a case. Of course, it will hide the beauty of the devices, but it will save on repairs.

Another important aspect is size. Both smartphones will be tight in your pants pocket, especially with the iPhone. S8 + is narrow, the iPhone is wide and you need to work with it with both hands.

The weight of the iPhone is 202 g, while the Samsung device weighs only 173 g. Smartphones feel solid in the hand, but when carried in your pocket, the extra weight of the iPhone adds inconvenience and you feel it clearly.

Given the large size, the fact that Samsung continues to place a fingerprint scanner in the back near the camera is annoying. You can get used to it, but it does not become more convenient from this. On the iPhone, the scanner is in front, there it is easier to reach.

Both devices have water protection: iPhone received IP67 certification, Galaxy IP68 . This means protection from dust and the ability to immerse them in water for 1 m for half an hour and 1.5 m for half an hour, respectively.

Flagship smartphones stand out from the crowd thanks to two things: the screen and the camera. These two models stand out precisely because they have some of the best screens.

Galaxy uses a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED panel, and a 5.5-inch LCD screen on the iPhone. The default resolution of both is 1080p, but on Galaxy you can upgrade it to Quad HD. Theoretically, this should increase the clarity of the image, but you are unlikely to see it by eye, but the energy will begin to be consumed faster.

The main difference is the shape of the screens. Samsung calls its version of Infinity Display, because it blends seamlessly with the body and has almost no frames. The aspect ratio of the screen to the case on the S8 + is 83%, while on the iPhone it is only 67.5% due to the large frames on the top and bottom. This is a significant difference, as a result of which the Galaxy screen allows you to get a greater immersion effect and contains more content.

It's not just about size: vibrant vibrant colors are also a virtue of these two devices. Galaxy contains various color modes between which users can choose. Adaptive mode is used by default and it displays rich vibrant colors with high contrast and deep black. IPhone screen colors are also good, but they are not able to achieve saturation level S8 +. Black here seems more gray and the contrast is not so high, but at the same time the colors look more balanced, although muffled.

There is an innovation on the iPhone in the form of True Tone. It allows you to automatically change the white balance of the screen depending on the ambient lighting, as a result of which the screen produces warmer colors in the rooms.

As everyone knows, these smartphones work on different operating systems. The iPhone comes with the latest version of iOS 11 , but S8 + cannot boast the latest version of Android. Although Android 8.0 was released back in August, the device is content with Android 7.1 and the Samsung Experience interface on top. As usual, updates to the latest version of Android will have to wait several months.

The advantage of the iPhone is the iMessage messenger. True, he is popular mainly in the United States, so Russian users buy iPhones not because of him. If you still work with it, the good news is that developers are constantly improving the service and adding functionality to it.

IPhone 8 Plus Interface

There is also an Apple ARKit augmented reality framework on the iPhone. Based on it, you can create games and applications, some of which the developers have already released. Not all of them are useful, but for some alternatives on Android yet.

Also a great advantage of the platform is the App Store. Here is a richer selection of high quality programs and games. In iOS 11, the store has been improved, as well as the system itself. Objects look great on a translucent background, fonts scale correctly; on Android, there is no such elaborate connectivity (although this is a subjective opinion).

Galaxy S8 + Interface

But on Android there are flexible customization options, graphic themes and icon packs. For advanced users, the ability to display two applications at the same time is available. There is also an Edge panel that contains shortcuts, favorite contacts, weather forecasts, stock information, etc.

In addition, the smartphone can be unlocked with one glance, first you just need to register the iris. The scanner works great when the device is close to the face, but in terms of reliability and speed, it does not reach the fingerprint scanner.

Also on the S8 + there is support for the DeX dock. If you put a smartphone in it, you can use a monitor, keyboard and mouse and turn the mobile device into a desktop computer. Samsung is not the first to try to offer such a functional, its implementation is also not perfect, but you can work with text, browser, images and video.

Siri, Bixby and Google Assistant

No self-respecting manufacturer nowadays produces smartphones without voice assistants. At Apple, this is Siri's assistant, at Samsung this year Bixby has appeared, and Google itself is integrating Google Assistant into Android.

Siri has one advantage over its competitors: the assistant can be launched on the lock screen. Thanks to this, you can quickly set an alarm, calendar, etc. The assistant also works on the Apple Watch and with AirPods.

Samsung Bixby is the youngest assistant and so far cannot boast of compatibility with new devices and other gadgets. But he has another advantage - the ability to work inside and applications, which his competitors do not know how to. However, you need to accurately select the phrases, because voice recognition here is not as accurate as we would like.

Google Assistant recognizes voice commands best of all, it more confidently distinguishes context and works faster.

Performance and Storage

This year, all flagship Android smartphones use the Snapdragon 835 processor. In addition, Samsung devices also use the Samsung Exynos 8895 chip with the same high performance. However, none of them can even be compared in terms of speed with the Apple A11 Bionic processor.

The Apple processor is 6-core, there are two large cores and four energy-efficient ones. Snapdragon 835 is an 8-core, here are four large and small cores. The memory capacity on the iPhone 8 Plus is 3 GB, on the S8 + 4 GB. In benchmarks, the Apple processor is far ahead of all competitors; at peak performance, it is able to surpass even Intel Core processors for laptops. In particular, there was information that the iPhone 8 bypassed the MacBook Pro laptop.

Do you need this kind of performance in real life? There are very few use cases where you can notice it. This includes video processing or editing high-resolution photos, but otherwise, working with the new iPhone is no different from working with the iPhone 7 or iPhone 6s. S8 + also functions very quickly, but not so smoothly and in some places there are slowdowns. For example, this happens when you open the list of applications.

For gamers, the iPhone is a more attractive device. It's not just about performance, but also about choosing games in the App Store. As you know, the Apple mobile platform brings developers a lot more profit, so they release their programs and games primarily here, and sometimes only here.

In terms of flash memory, the iPhone is available with options for 64 GB and 256 GB. MicroSD memory cards are traditionally absent. S8 + also has two options, 64 GB and 128 GB, here microSD is.

The difference between the cameras of these smartphones can be seen with the naked eye, since on the iPhone the rear camera is dual, and on the Galaxy single. The secondary camera of the iPhone allows you to zoom in and supports portrait mode . In this mode, the background is blurred and the object stands out more clearly. Previously, this feature was only available on larger cameras with larger sensors.

iPhone 8 Plus on the left, Galaxy S8 + on the right

You can immediately say that both cameras are excellent. Applications launch quickly, and photos are also taken quickly.

When comparing, you can note the color difference. iPhone uses a new color filter and the images are saturated and with a good white balance. S8 + is also not inferior, although most often the photos are not so saturated, but they have higher clarity. We can say that the photos come out different and which option to prefer is up to users to decide.

Portrait shooting

Galaxy portraits can be done using third-party apps, but they can't compare with the iPhone’s built-in feature. To consider this possibility important or not depends on how often and why you use the camera on smartphones. Photos in portrait mode on the iPhone are smaller than usual, they have lower detail, but in general the image is interesting. As the name implies, this mode is used for shooting portraits, so it’s not suitable for shooting flowers. There remains a lot of space to improve this functionality, which should happen in future generations of smartphones.

S8 + instead of portrait shooting offers a function called "Selective Focus", its purpose is about the same. Here, photographing is slower than usual and you need to firmly hold the device in your hand, since several images are simultaneously taken and combined into one. After that, you can set the focus to the foreground and blur the background, as in portrait mode. The accuracy is not as high as on the iPhone, but also not bad. The same feature is on the front camera, unlike the iPhone.

There is a new effect on the Apple smartphone called Portrait Lighting. It resembles conventional filters. There are options for Studio, Outline, Scene, and Mono Scene. The first effect is the most inconspicuous, the rest make too radical changes and often do not work as intended. This functionality is still in beta testing, so there is hope for improvement in the future.

In terms of shooting video, the iPhone has a clear advantage. It supports 4K at 60 frames / s, while Galaxy is content with the same resolution at 30 frames / s. As a result, the video quality becomes lower, it is almost impossible to edit it on Android, while on the iPhone you can do it in the iMovie application, although 4K 60fps is not yet supported. The file size for such a shooting is twice as high, the power consumption is also increased, so it is better to buy a 256 GB model if you are going to often shoot video at maximum quality.

Even when comparing 4K 30fps video, the iPhone offers improved dynamic range and stabilization. On Galaxy, when shooting a video, there is a jelly effect due to the operation of the optical image stabilization module.

Formats and sizes of photos and videos

iPhone 8 uses the new photo and video formats HEIF and HEVC, respectively. As a result, the file size has become half as much. For example, 1 minute of 4K 30fps video is written to a file of about 170 MB versus 350 MB before. Since these are new formats, their support is not common in applications. When exchanging with other programs, automatic conversion to standard file formats occurs. As a result, the exchange takes longer, but the compatibility problem will be solved. S8 + uses the popular JPEG and MP4 formats. They take up more space, but they are known to all applications on all operating systems.

The only S8 + speaker is located at the bottom of the case and does not represent anything outstanding. Compared to it, it seems even worse. The reason is that the iPhone 8 Plus has excellent stereo speakers at the bottom and in the auricle. The sound here is much better than on most smartphones, louder, cleaner, more pronounced.

Audio quality is even higher when using headphones, but the iPhone does not have a 3.5 mm jack for them. This jack was not already in the iPhone 7, and after a year stores can not boast an abundance of headphones with Lightning interface. You can use Apple AirPods. Includes 3.5mm> Lightning adapter. There is a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the S8 +.

Call quality

There were no problems during telephone calls using these two smartphones. There were complaints of static noise on the Internet on new iPhone models, but Apple had already released a software update and corrected the situation.

Offline work

Advantages in the form of smart screens and dual cameras can fade on the background of the fact that the devices need to be charged every day. The autonomy of smartphones has not improved for many years, unlike other components. However, little by little the situation is getting better. The smartphones in question work a little longer than their predecessors. For most people, they will work throughout the day.

Synthetic tests are designed to simulate real-world use cases of smartphones. With the screen turned on, the iPhone worked for 10 hours 35 minutes, with Galaxy the result was 8 hours. As you can see, the iPhone has a significant advantage, largely due to a more energy-efficient processor.

At the same time, the iPhone battery capacity is 2675 mAh, while the Galaxy has a 3500 mAh battery. This is another proof that the battery capacity can not be judged on the duration of the device.

Also, do not forget about the charging speed. On iPhone 8, support for fast recharging first appeared, which on other smartphones has been available for more than a year. To access it, you need to use the wrong adapter that is included in the package. Thus, the adapter will have to be purchased additionally, which will cost several thousand rubles. Given the high cost of the iPhone and the fact that on other smartphones such adapters are included in the package, Apple does not deserve good words. In addition, this adapter weighs more than others. From zero to 40%, it will charge the device in half an hour, approximately how it happens on the Galaxy.

Also, the iPhone acquired support for the Qi wireless charging standard, which is also available on Android for a long time. This support cannot be called maximum, since it supports a charger with a power of only 7.5 watts against 15 watts on the S8 +.

All this is fine, but a significant part of users when buying is guided primarily by price. iPhone 8 Plus in Russia costs 54,000 rubles. and 64,000 rubles., S8 + 55,000 rubles. and 60,000 rubles. As you can see, the iPhone is more expensive, but not significantly.

As mentioned at the beginning, these two smartphones have distinctive strengths. Galaxy has a frameless screen with excellent colors, a more modern design, better work with notifications on Android, settings and the open nature of the operating system. There is also a headphone jack.

The iPhone has a faster processor and smoother operation, it has a dual camera with portrait shooting, it is better suited for games and receives updates to the operating system faster. The device has other advantages, but do you want to get a device whose appearance has not changed for four years? The answer to this question may be one of the main ones.
